I am initial term enlisted 11B with my window open. I have heard two things from career counselors in my unit. I can reclass - Option 3 becuase I am intial term. I've also heard I can't because 11B is a shortage MOS. Does anyone know which one is true or is the counselor just trying to keep me in this MOS?
You will be offered Option 3, Army Training Reenlistment Option and the Army will offer you a few MOS based on its needs. You can choose from the MOSs the Army offers or a packet MOS.

I had this problem as a PFC when I reenlisted for the first time. No one told me about Option 3, the BN/BDE and Corps re-up people just made it sound like BEAR was my only option. It wasn't until I showed them the regulation (then they told me the regulation was out of date) and then eventually went to IG that I was able to re-up.
Sounds far fetched, I know, but those arty guys were pissed that I wanted to leave arty for MI. Most of them took it personally - it was pathetic.
After the whole ordeal I volunteered to become the battery re-up NCO (even though I was a SPC then) and take the 40 hour TAR course.

You only have one Career Counselor per battalion/unit ... are talking with an actual Career Counselor or a Reenlistment NCO?
Now, as an 11B, you cannot extend under the BEAR Program and it's very difficult (but not impossible) to request a vountary reclassification because your MOS is a shortage one ... these are all ways to change your MOS.
There may also be a terminology misinterpretation.
Yes, im talking to an actual career counselor. I am willing to reenlist to reclass to another shortage MOS 88N and I am told that because I am 11B I can't even though I am intial term.
