My re-up window opens 24 September, and I have no doubt that I want to re-enlist. I am planning on signing for DLI, which is approved for my MOS(35M). However, I would really really like to go to Ft. Sam after I'm done at DLI. I have been told by several senior NCO's, as well as my CC, that I can choose a school OR assignment of choice as a re-up incentive. One clever NCO said that a way around this was to call up Branch and see if they can get me my assignment to Sam. He said "Tell them you are gonna re-up for 6 if you get Sam." Now, enough back-brief... on to the questions.

1. Is this advice accurate?

2. How far out can Branch project an assignment for you?

3. Will it work?

4. Will I end up having to call Branch from DLI and begging for Sam from there?

Thanks for all your help! Stay Army!

This is very sound advice ...

This isn't very good advice at all .... not so clever either.

Once you receive your DLI training, you'll be assigned in accordance with the needs of the Army. If the needs of the Army are at Fort Sam Houston, you'll be assigned there.

Your branch can see assignments out as far as 18-months, but most (not all) branch managers do not manipulate the reenlistment process for Soldiers.

Sorry, but if there were really a way, Soldiers wouldn't need Career Counselors.

Just want to weigh in as a 35M. Branch is not going to want to work an assignment for you until you are at LEAST half way through DLI and on the track to graduation because if they put you somewhere like 4th ID and say you're scheduled to graduate 1 May and they are set to leave 1 July and suddenly you get rocked or rolled...then they don't have time to fill that slot without screwing over some other unit or something.

Are you trying to get to that interrogation company/BN that just stood up down there?

From my experience 35M branch is interested in putting your butt in Iraq or Afghanistan right after DLI...the Army only has so many 35Ms and in the eyes of slots needing to be filled, you have just been d**king around in TRADOC for 1-1.5 years and it's time to get back into the field.

As for screwing over the government, the only way I could see you being able to do that (and not really even so much) is if you wanted Bragg or Richardson as your duty station after DLI and you volunteered for airborne school while at DLI.

Might as well make myself useful around here for a bit. Smiler

As another example, as a SSG I re-upd to come to Huachuca. My initial request was for Arabic at DLI but branch was like, if we are putting a SSG ANYWHERE in TRADOC, it's going to be Huachuca.

35M3L00F,

SSG, Roger, I'm hoping to go the the BN that just stood up there. I have a couple of buddies that went there out of Huachuca and they have nothing but good things to say. On the other hand, I have absolutely no problem going downrange, considering it's one of the few places I actually get to do interrogations. I guess I'll re-up, go to DLI, and see where the Army wants to send me.

You are at Huachuca, correct? Do you, by chance, know a SSG Larson? He just PCS'd from my unit here in Germany and is at Huachuca pushing AIT platoons through the school house.

I have been in the Army now for 10.5 years and I'm assigned to 4th FT. Campell. I'm in a life cycle unit until 200910. My P MOS is 11B/31B I'm SGT(P) and get my E-6 Aug 1st. and want to re-list. I was told I can't reclass to secondory 31B. I'm fine with that but I told the CC I wanted FT. Steward, Ga. The CC replied, no you are the needs of the Army now. You need can only go where they want you to. I feel this is wrong because, if I'm going to give the Army 6 more years they could send me to where I want to go. I update my ASK and this MIGHT work but was told more than like not. I'm going to call my branch and see if there is anything they can do. My problem is this! Once I sign the papers, I might have to stay with 4TH BDE FT. Campbell, because of the amount of Soldiers they are going to loss when we get back. I have worked very hard to get my GT above 110 so that I could re-class. It got it I'm the needs of the Army now. I have to stay INF. if I stay in. Is there anything other than what I have done to get to FT. Steward? I would like to stay in but I don't want to stay at Campbell. Is there anything I have missed. thanks

When you reach your tenth year of active federal service, your only reenlistment option is Option 1, Regular Army. This is the current Army policy. Also, if you are a SSG over 10 years, you'll be reenlisting under the indefinite reenlistment program and your new ETS will reflect your RCP (which is your 22nd year of active service) ... so you want to reenliist for the 6 now.

Also, your branch managers will not normally talk with a Soldier that is within their reenlistment window ... this tends to circumvent the entire reenlistment process.
