My question is this... I am currently 88k and have been in my window for a year. I was in the air force years ago but never finished basic and was given an erroneous entry seperation. My career counselor tells me that when I came in the Army 3 years ago that was considered my first re-enlistment (due to my brief service in AirForce) which means all the options that are available to first time re-uppers are gone and I can only choose an MOS on the BEAR list. Is this true? I was told by a COL. in the airforce that due to the fact I never finished basic I am not considered prior service. Is there anyway for me to re-enlist to change my MOS to 88N without it being on the BEAR list?
1. Why on earth would you want to go from K to N?????
2. The COL was right, because you weren't prior service. You were what is called Days of Service since I am presuming you served under 180 days with the Air Force.
3. I really don't know how that will factor in with re up though.
Now comes my opinion: You are making a stupid move from the outside looking in. Please inform why you would go from K to N???
Kilo sucks man... I'm in a non deployable unit and I WANT TO DEPLOY... I volunteered and got orders to go to Iraq but my 1SG had them cancelled because he said he couldn't afford to loose anyone. It's a very pointless job, we do stupid little missions just to stay alive but are in no way helping the Army or IT'S mission. I don't even feel like I'm a soldier anymore and most of the guys in my unit are bags and are happy not doing any work or deploying. From the inside looking out, I'm in a true soldiers hell.
Knock out as much education as possible and then go warrant in 88K. Then you will have your opportunities to deploy, and have sea pay and a better retirement. You won't stay in that unit forever, you will eventually PCS. It sounds as though the problem you have is with the unit, not the MOS. In WLC I knew quite a few 88K's that went to Kuwait and other deployments. Just get to a more high speed unit than the current one, and in the mean time knock out your Civilian Ed. Then make your decision. I know the side of 88K that you speak of, but there is another side you may enjoy if you stick with the MOS long enough to see it. I hope I am helping you out with this.
