I'm an intial term soldier, about 6 months time in service. My current MOS (13F) is balanced and I'd like to switch to a shortage MOS (35P). I meet the 35P MOS requirements, save the clearance (I have secret but probably wouldn't have any trouble getting TS if the investigation was performed). Am I eligible to apply a 4187 for voluntary reclass at any time? Do I have to wait a certain amount of time? Does my PMOS have to be overstrength or can it be balanced?

Not necessarily anytime, but looks very good with your situation.

Typically an MOS producing school (or any school for that matter) has a service obligation after graduation. I didn't see any for your current MOS, but based on a 8 week school, you're looking at a service ogligation of 9-months. (AR 614-200, Chapter 4, Table 4-1)

Overstrength or balanced ... in some cases understrength if going if reclassifying to a shortage MI MOS.

I am a SGT 11B. My re-enlistment window will open in July. This will be my 2nd re-up. I would like to voluntarily re-class. The MOS I am looking for is 35S or 35G, I already have a TS(SCI option)and meet all the other requirements. I want to re-class and then re-enlist to get the bonus. Can I put in a 4187 to reclass, or do I need to wait till my window opens. My ETS date is 9Jul10. Also, I am overseas, and my DEROS is 8Jan09. If I am able to reclass with either option, can I get a school date before my DEROS is up? Any help would be great!

You're best bet would be to request one of these MOSs for your reenlistment. You won't be offered Option 3, Army Training Reenlistment Option because you're a mid-career Soldier, but you can request this as an exception to policy (through your Career Counselor).

Both MOSs you're asking about are short through SSG so you should be good if you meet all their qualifications.

Also, you cannot participate in the BEAR Program to get a bonus because your current MOS (11B) is a shortage MOS. You will not receive a bonus for this reenlistment.

Is there anyway that I could do it by putting in a 4187, without re-enlisting. My Command know what Im trying to do and supports me. And I talked to my branch manager and he said that they would release me to reclass. The problem is I don't know what the next step is. I have a packet with all my requirements: Clearance printout, physical, transcripts, everything. I have a 4187 filled out, and waiting to be signed. I just don't know where it goes next, or who the approving authority is. Or is this not even possible. I would like to try this option first. The worst thing that could happen is for it to get turned down then I go through the re-up option. Also do you know if I could get a school date before my DEROS is up?

Thanks for the help.

All reclassification actions go through your Career Counselor for processing up to HRC. HRC is the approval/disapproval authority.

You will not be leaving before your DEROS; unless it's a few weeks.
