I am curretnly a SGT in 3rd ID. I'm a 63J with almost 5 YIS. I want to reclass to a 68W. Eventually I plan on going back to SFAS and becoming a 18D.

I read on here a few months ago about a SGT who reclassed to a 68W. It mentioned that he got a grade waiver and a letter of acceptance from the school. There may have been more but I'm not sure.

Right now I want to reclass to a 68W and keep my rank if possible. I have been told throught the BEAR program that all SPC (P) and below can reclass into this MOS. Since I'm a SGT they are telling me I can't, but I know that it has been done. Currently my MOS is understrenght so I understand that they may not want to let me go, but I would be going to another understenght MOS so I think it may work.

Any information about reclassing as a SGT to a medic is highly appreciated. Right now they are talking about administratively reducing me to a SPC to allow me to meat the needs of the BEAR program.

I honestly don't have a problem doing that, but it means alot to me begin an NCO and I would rather keep my rank if I could. If not I understand and I'll do what I need to to reclass to a medic.

Since you are a SGT, you are not eligible for 68W through the BEAR Program.

Who told you 63J was understrength? If it were (which it is not), you would not be eligible for the BEAR Program. Your MOS must be balanced or overstrength.

68W is balanced for SGT through SGM. They are understrength SPC and below.

If you are within your 24-month reenlistment window, you can request an option exception for 68W. If HRC approves this, you'll be on your way. Just be prepared for a "Plan B".

Last time I checked my in/out bracket said I was a N/N. If they won't let us(my MOS as a SGT) out doesn't that mean that they are close too if not understrengh? Whenever I bring up the possibility of reclassing it goes down to the in out call. Where is the in/out sheet on army reenlistment.com?

FYI ...

Y/N = understrength
N/N = balanced
N/Y = overstrength

You can find the latest in/out calls on the Virtual Reenlistment Board.

Since you are in your 24-month reenlistment window, you cannot request reclassification ... you'll either BEAR or select Option 3 (as an axception).

To reguest option exception you would use a 4187? What do I need to provide to HRC? Is it a form or something on there website?

You actually do nothing. Your Career Counselor has to do all of this. It goes through their RETAIN system.

How do in and out calls apply to Option 3, Training of Choice? Does it have to be N/N or N/Y for current MOS and Y/N for requested?

If you are an initial term Soldier, the in/out calls don't apply for getting the option. All initial term Soldiers are offered Option 3.

As far as what the Army offers you, it's normally an understrength MOS or balanced (sometimes), but never an overstrength.
