Hey I am not yet in the Army. I am going for the Reserves in a couple months and I want to enlist as a MP at the moment. Becuase I want a career in law enforcement. But I was wondering if I really end up liking the Army and want to stay in as a career will I be able to switch to active and reclass aswell? I would probally go Infantry, see if I can go to sniper school. As well as go to AB and Ranger school. How much more training would I need to reclass to Infantry from MP? And how difficult would this whole process be for me? Thanks.

I can't see you needing more training. And it might not be as easy as you might think. There's these things called In/Out calls, which tells what MOS's are over and under strength. 31B has been understrength for awhile now. Easy to get into, not so easy to get out. I would imagine that 11B would be understrength also.

Sniper School is great and all, but if a career in LE is what you want, then you'll get more condusive training as an MP then as a Ranger or a Sniper. If you go Active, Airborne school is just a 4187 away, so I wouldn't stress too much about that.

Let me elaborate a little more on MP schooling. You're already privvy to schools like SRT and PSD and K9. But those are just the Army schools. As and MP and depending on your duty station and position, you have access to just about every State and Federal LE school there is. You have to go through an MP certification every time you get to another post. I'm doing mine right now. And if the post you're at doesn't run it themselves, then you'll probably attend a course run by the state. Different parts of MP cert come with certifications by certain institutions also. Right now, we're being SFST (field sobriety test) certified by the National Highway Transportation Safety Association. It doesn't get any better than that. The FBI even come's and teaches classes at some posts. K9 school alone gives you certificaltions in the civilian sector. Visit www.cool.army.mil for other opportunities.

Just something to think about man. Don't get caught up in the flash and "coolness" of Infantryism. I'm not knocking them or thier schools, because who doesn't want to be double-stacked, Ranger-SF-Sniper Badass M-effer? I know I do! But you need to remember that if it's a civilian career that you expect the Army to prepare you for,you need to be smart and make choices that will set you up right.

Just my 20 cents... Big Grin

That is something you will have to ask the recruiters. If available then they will send you to 11B AIT when you go active. They may offer other stuff to you. If so then come back on and ask about some of the MOSs when that time comes. Good luck.

Way to be constructive. Don't be stupid. Just because you can't make things work for yourself, doesn't mean it's impossible. I've applied for plenty of things via a 4187, and while I haven't gotten everything I wanted, I'm like 5 for 9. And if you can't get it the first time, try try again.

Rider, my post was sarcasim directed at Smittaayy. It was not actual advice.

If I were to give advice I would say to figure out where you want to be in 4 or 5 years. Evaluate your enlistment options with that in mind.

BUT once/if you sign the papers commit yourself. Set mid-term goals within the military. You will have the normal requirments but Soldier Boards, CLEP, DANTES and other civilian education can move you along.

If Ranger with a civilain application is in your 4 or 5 year goals then ask your recruiter what support MOS is in Ranger Bat. (I know MP is not one of them.)

Smittaayy, I hope this met your requirments for a post. Now, don't you have to go set up a speed trap on an FOB?
