I was in a very similar situation in 05. The first thing i was told was to look at the IN/OUT calls. The next thing I was submit a request to the 68WM6 POC (cant recall whom) to get an acceptance to train in that program. (MOS and ASI). (I also needed a grade waiver, since I was an E5) I then went back to my Career Counselor with that approval, and it went very smooth from there. Thats how i recall, and 1/3 of the class, were prior service NON medical before. Which means they all reclassed for an MOS + ASI (both).
Best of luck, and Im sure you already heard before, if you pick 68W, and and under the impression that you can add on the ASI when you get here, that wont happen. You have to have it in your paperwork prior to report.
Things do change, this was just what went down for me 2 yrs ago.
A Career Counselor will probably read this, and square you away!
best of luck!!!

When I was in 68W school, there were other soldiers who wanted ASI's, and were under that same impression.
I did NOT see one single soldier, get an ASI while in AIT. Nor did I ever hear any "asking for volunteers" for asi's.
Now this was 2yrs ago. Things change. Maybe now you CAN NOT get an mos+ asi when u reclass. I am not sure, my info/experience is 2 yrs old.
I do highly highly doubt also that NOW its any differant, in the sence that they WONT ask for volunteers for asi's.
My advice, if your deadset on an ASI...if you dont get it in paper at same time as MOS, you are NOT going to get it. Now if the MOS is good enuf for now, and the ASI is something that u can wait for...then thats a differant story.
About getting ASI+MOS in your contract, agian......a Career Counselor will im pretty sure read this and square you away with a black or white answer on that.
