I am one year in my current contract. I am prior service Marines. I am an E-5 trying to reclass from 88N to 44B or 63B. Can I do this?

Couple things ...

Congrats on going the Marine Corps route and coming to improve the Army! There are many of us that made the transition. Wink

Since 88H is balanced and 63B is understrength, your can request a voluntary reclassification. Sorry, but 44B is overstrength/balanced throughout.

When is your ETS?

Thanks for responding so fast. My ETS is April 2011.
The last I seen the 88N is balanced as well. I have a trade in metal work but I am happy to do 63B. I have been told by my retention NCO and my CC that I cant get out of the November field. Would you be able to help point me in the right direction?

I misread your MOS ...

88N is also balanced throughout. You shoud be able to submit a volntary reclassification packet and this will no doubt be approved.

Reclassification used to be a difficult process (adminstratively), but HRC made some MAJOR improvements and streamlined it for easier processing. Many Career Counselor don't process enough reclassification actions to become experts; you may need to talk with a senior Career Counselor.

The DA Form 4187 is simply to initiate an action and that your chain of command is aware of it.

The actual reclassification process takes place with your Career Counselor through their RETAIN system and HRC (approval/disapproval authority).

Also, if your rank changes, you must simply check the In/Out Calls to verify your MOS is overstrength/balanced and the MOS you're looking at is understrength.

Thanks for you help.

The CC has already put in the packet with my 4187.

How long does it take to get a response usually?

Normally within 30 days, but HRC has made major improvements with the reclassification process so you may get a response back sooner.

You don't contact HRC; your Career Counselor does. Get with your Career Counselor and they can probably provide an update for you.
