I'm currently a 68G in my reenlistment window. I want to reclass to be a 68W and I'm being told that since my MOS is over strength that I can change my MOS and get my choice of duty station is this true?

Ghost,

If your MOS is overstrengthened and identified as such on the In/Out Calls, you can submit a DA 4187 to reclass. Your retention NCO can assist with this action.

Other considerations that can make it easy or easier to reclassify is where are you in your current term and how much time do you have in? Programs such as the Bear Program identify critically short MOS'es in the Army and offer awesome incentives. If you are in your 1-year reenlistment window and are a first-termer or under 10-years, there are many opportunites available to you that are not offered to more "seasoned" Soldiers.

As far as incentives (duty station of choice) that also depends on what is being offered at the time that you reclass and what program you are reclassifying under, e.g. reenlistment option, BEAR, etc.

Why do you want to be a 68W?

I have done my 4187 already just waiting on the repliy if its approved or not. But as far as my time in I have 2 years in the Army reserve and 3 now on Active duty. So to my understanding since I was conditionally released from the reserve this is like being first term. The main reason I want to be a 68W is its more hands on than the MOS I have now You get to help other soldiers on a regular basis and not be stuck behind a computer 25/7 like I am now.

Ghost,

As a former 68WM64H, I am biased. It is a great MOS, with lots of opportunities. I was signal for the first 10 years of my career as a 31C and spent the latter 11 as a 68WM6. It was definitely a big change from the rigors of units like Field Artillery to the comforts of clinics and hospitals, but I think I adapted ;-) It took me longer to get used to the relaxed atmosphere that seems to plague many medical units (not all, but some).

Goodluck to you on the MOS change. I am currently working as an Instructor for the Department of Combat Medic Training (DCMT).

I would advise you to get into some A&P books so this all does not come as such a shock. Within 3 days of starting school, you will be a CPR Provider, within 6-7 weeks an NREMT, and then on to the field craft side of the house with about 2 weeks of didactic and then outside for lane training, STX, and FTX.

Check out the website, it may answer any questions that you have and of course, feel free to ask me.

As a prior service Soldier, be ready to deal with the BS...just keep your eye on what and why you came to FSH to be a 68W.

My next question isabout the school date. I am currently deployed to Kuwait if you can call it deployed anyway my unit is going to start 6 month rotations around december if I get a school date around the december or january time frame is the unit obligated to make sure I make it back for the school? I asked the retention NCO here and all she could tell me is that I'd get a school date for when I rotated back to the states.

Is your unit going to be stop lossed? If so, then your school seat will be for after you get back. You need to know about the stop loss issue and how it will affect your unit. Check out MILPER message 06-232 for more info.

Not while in your reenlistment window. You'll reenlist for Option 3, Army Training Option.

The reenlistment window is 24-months; not 12-months.

Options 4 (OCONUS Assignment) and 5 (CONUS Station of Choice) are reenlistment options, not incentives. What's the difference? You are signing a contract with the Army for options; incentives are given by local commands to entice Soldiers to reenlist?

You do not need a DA Form 4187 (unless you require a waiver for the new MOS); just go see your Career Counselor and if you qualify, he/she can lock you in for 68W.

You are an initial term Soldier if you have less than 180 days of prior active service.

ArmyReen,

The window is now 24-months? Good gravy!! So, if a Soldier originally enlisted for 4 years, can he or she reenlist for a minimum of 2 years when they hit that reenlist window or is there a new minimum for reenlistments? I always reenlisted as soon as I hit my 12-mth window so I was able to take advantage of any incentives for a longer period of time (under the 10-year mark) unlike some of my peers who would wait until the last possible moment to reenlist.

Thanks for the info!!

Army reen- I received the following from my BDE retention NCO. Is this correct, the deployed one is the crazy. Regardless of ETS can reenlist? I heard that minimum for SRB is three years so you could not do the combatmedicskirt option.lol ..The following is the email;

Here is Retention Options 101:

The Army has 3 ways of categorizing a Soldier:

1. Initial Term- Has less then 180 days prior active service OR has never reenlisted before

2. Mid Career- Has over 180 days of prior active service OR has reenlisted at least once AND has LESS than 10 years of AFS at ETS.

3. Career- Any Soldier who has over 10 years of AFS at time of reenlistment or at their ETS.

REUP WINDOW:

24 Months from ETS all options in which a Soldier is eligible for open, There is no 18 month policy anymore. All options open at 24 months from ETS.

DEPLOYED WINDOW:

Soldiers can reenlist regardless of ETS to get either Option 1 or Option 2 (options explained in flier) and a bonus, they must meet the bonus requirements and that is another lesson, your 1SG has access to my knowledge center which explains bonuses and eligibility for them. There are 2 current Bonus messages for deployed Soldiers, the Enhanced SRB and the Deployed bonus, both of these are also in the knowledge center. If anyone is looking to get a bonus outside of the reenlistment window, have them contact me to see which one is the best for them.

Initial Term Soldiers- Qualify for ALL 5 reenlistment options EXCEPT if they are in an overstrength MOS in accordance with current In/ Out calls in which case they are restricted to OPT 1 or OPT 3

Mid Career Soldiers- Qualify for OPT 1, OPT 2, OPT 4, and OPT 5 EXCEPT if they are in an overstrength MOS in accordance with current In/ Out calls in which case they are restricted to OPT 1 or OPT 3. As an exception Mid Career Soldiers in a balanced MOS can request to reenlist for MOS's on the Critically shortage list.

Career Soldiers with Mid Career Options- If a Soldier will have 10 years at ETS, but has not quite reached 10 years at time of eligibility for options, than they can receive MID Career options

Career Soldiers- If SGT and below will get OPT 1 NOT INDEF, SSG and above OPT 1 INDEF ONLY
