My reenlistment window is open in a month, I'm a first term soldier. Just wondering if anyone knows if its possible to reclass to MP with k9 school option? I know if your already a MP you can reup for K9 school.
I don't think so. That would be doubling up on Option 3. K9 is an ASI school, and it requires a recommendation from your (MP) BN CSM. Anyway, I would recommend getting some time in working the road and learning the ropes first.
TS177 I highly recommend going K9 I just reelisted for it and i leave this october. But like the other 2 said you can't get it and MP so just wait til the 2 year window opens again and jump for the k9. Campbell barracks is a good place to go (anyone will tell you that) but also try for japan if it ever opens.
Speaking as a current K-9 MP no you can not get both as the same time. You need to need to prove yourself as an MP first. It seems harsh but you need to know the "rules of the road" before you are given that extra level of force. You are also limited on you abilities once you have the Z6 ASI. It is a wonderful thing to have don't get me wrong and I would not be doing any other job in the world. Your MWD is your partner and you will be a great battle buddy team once you get that trust.
Also keep in mind that others will look at your job as easy, and that you do not do anything all day. Trust me that is not true, in my kennels we start at 0630 with training the dogs and go home around 1700 everyday. There are hours to make or you and your MWD will be uncertified. It is a tough job but one that not one of the guys I work with would give up for anything in the world. Watch the movie War Dogs, it will show you the history of the MWD's and you will see older handlers tell their stories. It is a very rewarding job even with the long hours, and training requirements. I LOVE it.
