A little background information first: I've been in the Army for a total of 3 years now, am a specialist, and have never deployed. Two and a half of those years was in the Army Reserve as a 42A (human resources). I recently went active duty, changed my PMOS to 11C and got to my duty station in November.
When I got here, I got a high PT score and my unit had some slots for pre-ranger/ranger school and my platoon sergeant offered me a slot. Being an infantry guy, the prospect of going to Ranger School and earning a tab makes my mouth water and gives me warm fuzzies; however, I'm not sure whether I should accept the offer or decline it for now. My concern is that I just don't have any real experience or confidence in the knowledge of my field yet to be any kind of leader. Can a highly motivated cherry joe with no experience and little knowledge in army leadership go to Pre-Ranger and then on to Ranger school and stand a decent chance of graduating?

Nebbie,

You would be stupid to decline a Ranger School slot! I came from Ranger Battalion so we had plenty of slots, but the regular army doesn't get nearly as many. Also, a few of my buddies in the RA where always promised and then the slots would majically disappear.

If your pre-ranger course is anything like the 75th's then you will learn everything you need to know. All you really need is motivation whether it be false or real. Just remember you don't get your go your buddies get your go for you. Once you get to Camp Rogers find some Bat. Boys and "hangout" with them. We are always the majority of the squared away dudes.
As long as you are not a "Shitbag" you should do fine.

bigfish is right, and trust me you will learn what you need to know there. My unit sends all their soldiers (ie. medics, commo, supply and Infantry) to Ranger school for the leadership development side of the house. Definetly go!

This is a definite YES, GO FOR IT! The Army (and Rangers) are better off with a highly motivated volunteer wanting to add something.

I have heard that if a unit sends a soldier to Ranger school, they can stabilize them in that unit for a 1 or 2 years. So if you like the pre ranger course and want to go to the Battalion, try to go there first, and they will send you to school.

I can't find the reference for this, so someone correct me if this is wrong.

Never saw this in writing anywhere ... if you'd like to research and provide the regulation/policy, we'd be glad to read it.

Thought it would take me longer than this to find it.

Units sending soldiers TDY and return are authorized to stabilize a soldier for 24 months (no longer than 48 months time on station) upon successful completion of Ranger School.

It's from the HRC website

This page is not very up-to-date seeing as they have incorrect MOS identifiers from 4 to 5 years ago. These types of pages within HRC are not being maintained as much as they should.

May want to check out the actual Ranger pages for the most current informatiob.
