okay i'm planning on being a rigger and i do have some jump school questions but i'll get to that later. My question has to do with the validity of an incident that supposedly happened in Iraq. Is it possible for an airborne soldier to "steal somebody's wind"? and how does it happen if it is possible? If you can answer that question for me it would be great because i have more to the story that needs to be answered as well. HOOAH!!

Short answer yes. You can but its not really stealing cause the lower jumper always has the right of way. But once you go to jump school they will explain it to you and how to avoid it and how it happens.

Yes it is possible.
If you slip below another jumper, then your parachute basically uses all of the air to slow your decent (think along the lines of aerodynamics). The jumper above will then begin to decend at a rapid rate (possibly on top of the other jumpers parachute). The physics are similar to someone drafting during a race, the first person gets all the wind resistance, while the second gets very little.

Yeah, if you're involved it sucks! I saw two guys leap frog (keep stealing eachothers air) all the way down. They hit hard! That is cause when you lose your air your chute temporarily collapses and you drop fast!

I'm a heavy drop, so I always fall fast though, so I have no sympathy!

thank you everyone for your quick response. so basically what i got out of this is that the person over top was pretty much at fault. and should've known to get out from over top of him? Supposedly the guy who had his air "stolen" is an airborne ranger (no clue on whether his jump certification was up to date or not). any idea if there would've been an investigation into the incident?

Why would an investigation take place? This happens all the time!

Like JWEEZY said, "The LOWER Jumper has the Right of Way," but this is not all black and white. We all get dropped at different times and sometimes very close together depending on the drop and dropzone. If you get near a fellow jumper you are supposed to "slip away", but how do you slip away when there are jumper all around you?

When you get down to the meat and potatoes of it all, no one is really at fault, unless someone did something other than how they were trained!

the only reason why i asked if an investigation would've taken place is because he and this other guy got injured quite badly and the person who was telling me what happened was in the Marines and not the Army so his opinion and view of the situation was sort of biased. as in (the army sucks airborne are pussies and the Marines are somehow Gods in his eyes). He had the opportunity to go to airborne school but pussed out of it so i take what he says with a grain of salt...if you know what i mean. HOOAAH!! "Death From Above"
