My husband recently got extra duty and they have been working him real hard. My question is isnt there a specific amount of hours per day that they can work you. I heard it was 4 hours on weekdays and 8 on weekends...is this true? I would appreciate any comments or information on this matter if possible. He has been working 13 hours on weekends and he hasnt done anything to get his time extended so can they do this? I went to this site and got some information on extra duty but I dont know if certain laws apply for certain posts or units...HELP PLEASE

well when i'm on staff duty, it was the SGM that told us how long he wanted the "extra duty" folks to stay on.

In my Battery he was know to have them on duty until 2359 and still report for PT in the morning.

Usually when I sat on staff duty, our extra duty guys worked from 1700-2359 during the week and something like 0800-2000 or so on the weekend. I may well be wrong but I don't know that there is an actual reg that says how long extra duty can run other then that Soldiers should be alloted at least 4 hours of sleep a night.

(AR 27-10 CH. 3)
(5) Extra duties. Extra duties may be required to be performed at anytime and, within the duration of the
punishment, for any length of time. No extra duty may be imposed that—
(a) Constitutes cruel or unusual punishment or a punishment not sanctioned by the customs of the Service; for
example, using the offender as a personal servant.
(b) Is a duty normally intended as an honor, such as assignment to a guard of honor.
(c) Is required to be performed in a ridiculous or unnecessarily degrading manner; for example, an order to clean a
barracks floor with a toothbrush.
(d) Constitutes a safety or health hazard to the offender, or
(e) Would demean the Soldier’s position as a NCO or specialist (SPC) (AR 600–20).


This is what AR 27-10 which covers ART 15's, how they are conducted and what may be imposed when receiving an ART 15. If he has questions about his Article 15 then he needs to look up the regulation on this matter.

I don't mean to sound unsympathetic, but... extra duty isn't designed to keep a soldier in thier comfort zone. Chief Pyro's unit sounds a lot like all the one's I've been to. On weekdays, extra duty starts after COB and goes until anywhere from 2100 to midnight. And on the weekends, they do 0700/0800 until 2100 Saturday, and Sunday off. He needs to find his unit's extra duty SOP.
