Army Reserves seem to no longer be a Reserve Unit at all but they Soldiers that we rely on to keep the peace after the Active Army goes in and comes back out to reset themselves to fight somewhere else. Those Reserve Units commonly go on deployments understrength because people suddenly realize they will be gone more than two weeks and develope an illness that prevents them from deploying. Are these people getting the shaft??? Maybe, but they still signed on the dotted line that put them under the Commander in Chiefs' control, so they should be mentally prepared to do whatever they are ordered to do. I think that those on long deployments should be better compensated when they return, but that Soldiers should be expected to pull their weight when called upon no matter what component.

No Reserves For me, thanks. It seems to me they are all getting called up and thrown into the fray. If that is going to happen, it makes just as much sense then just to go active duty. Planning your life would be easier as an Active duty soldier because unlike the Reservist, you are not leaving career and family at the drop of a hat.

My buddy spent 4 years Active, with never a thought of deployment. Got out into the NG and 1 month later, they got called up and were on there way to the sandbox! Bad business if you ask me. I also met a guy the other day that got called back from inactive reserves. He lost 2 businesses that made hime $400k a year to come back. Even worse business.

yes alot of the reserves get called up lately but then look at how many places we are supporting as an army kosovo is now a reserve/NG area only (for the most part anyway) then the 2 sandbox sites that takes alot of people to man. yes lots of people loose money ging but the military is working on a way to make that easier to chew. the congress is beginning to realise what a asset the reseves are and there should be more benifits comming in the future.

Active life is cool cuz you can save money and the level of expectation is high. But with the reserves i can go to school raise my son by my self and if the economy fails i can sign up for active and will get my rank faster than active duty. The only bad part is the whole weekend warrior thing some gi's are really pathetic, and an army is as strong as its weakest link
but that will change very soon due to current events.

I served on active duty for six years and then came into the guard, been in for additional ten years. We were called up in January 03 and will be on active duty until January 2005. After that I am requesting to stay on active duty to finish out my time for retirement. ALL of my soldiers served at least three years of active service before coming to the national guard, this was so they could get the GI bill and 100% paid college from the Guard. They get all their education paid for plus drill pay and an additional $400.00 a month spending money. Not bad.
