I need some advise about being on the weight control program and having a medical condition at the same time. Well, I've been overweight for 18 months and I'm aware that I should have been chaptered out by now, but my unit doesn't discharge people for being overweight. My problem is that I have tried to loose the weight and I do exercise. I am embarrassed, frustrated, and worry myself to death every month. I can't eat normally because when I do I gain weight. I basically starve myself by eating and drinking very little. I have managed to drop some weight by doing this for the last 18 months. But then as soon as I start craving food I eat and gain the weight right back. As a result my weight has fluctuated and now I weigh more than I weighed 18 months ago.

Recently I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Sydrome. The symptoms are: irregular periods, weight gain (especially around the waist), abdominal pain, hair loss, excessive facial hair, and depression. I either have or have had all of the described symptoms I named. So my doctor gave me medication, put me on a 6 month temporary profile, and told me to give it to my unit. I asked her if I needed to tell my unit what my condition is, she said absolutely not (HIPAA) unless I want to. I knew my unit would have an issue with my profile because it says I can't do the PT test or get weighed in or taped for 6 months.

The training NCO gave the profile to my 1SG and like I already knew he had a problem with it. He talked to me and my NCOIC and told me the profile was bullshit, he shredded it, and called an officer (doctor) in my unit and asked him to change it. I'm not sure how true this was because he didn't give me a copy of it, but now I don't know what to do. If he wants me to weight in and get taped as well as take a PT test then I guess I'll have to, but what about my profile? I feel like I shouldn't have to violate my profile just because he feels that I'm trying to cheat the system. I am going to ETS in February and asked if I could extend on Active Duty until my profile ends in April. At first he said absolutely not until I showed him the regulation that states the Army allows overweight soldiers to extend if they have a temporary medical condition. Which in my case I do have one, and I've had one for a very long time but I just didn't know it. I work in a Medical Unit and I have seen the doctors a few times for having continous irregular periods but they just told me it was because of a hormone imbalance, nothing to worry about. Then I ended up in the emergency room for having severe pain near my uterus and the doctor was bothered by how long I've had irregualr periods and referred me to a gynecologist.

So, now I have to go back to my doctor and have her write in detail what my medical condition is, and how long it will take to treat. I'll do whatever I have to do, but I'm still confused. Can a civilian doctor (that works in our hospital) tell the Army that a Soldier can't get weighed in or taped if they are on the overweight program? She encouraged that I stay physically active but suggested I not take the PT Test. Also, can my 1SG have a military doctor (that I did not see, don't know, or ever talked to) change my profile? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

i was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease...it has caused me to grow(swell) right where i get taped...i failed tape about a year ago, they sent me to sick call, nutritionist, etc. and lo and behold i have PKD...they gave me a profile, and i hated it so i went and got it changed...i then worked my @$$ off to thin up my waist (i'm not a fat guy)...

...basically what i'm trying to say is having a condition shouldn't stop you...people overcome adversity and challenges everyday, you can too...if someone who got his leg(s) blown off can take a morning run with President Bush, you can find a way to make tape...

...my 2 cents...

BUT to answer your question, no your 1SG cannot do that. And if a doctor changed a profile without looking at you he should have his license taken away. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure that you stay healthy, that's Army Regulation.

If a civilian doctor works at an Army hospital he IS an army doctor. He has all the authority that an officer would have. If your 1SG wants to challenge that I think that the OIC in charge of that hospital needs to have a little chat with your 1SG.

Oh, and ALWAYS keep the original of your profile. Only give copies to whoever asks for it.

No he can not do that. Just go to your doc for help like 14 J said. But just do your best to show them that you are willing to do something about it. Just don't take the profile and give up.
Good luck

You were a little late on this one. I would watch the cursing. Substituting $@%@#% for letters does not fly with the mods here. No one in this discussion gave her bad advice. Yes she had a condition, but she can still work towards losing weight. PCOS is not a life threatening or completely debilitating disorder such as some cancers. It is generally treatable. I'm sure she turned out fine. A slight over-reaction. Oh, and that signature is a bit overkill.
