I have an ETS date of DEC07. I gave the army time to change my mind about leaving and so far they have. I'm extremely picky and constantly check for the best options. Reclass to 68W was in the works until the new SRB for 92F came out. I could now go to Germany and bank over $10,000 for a 3 year re-up. The reclass thing looks good but MUCH less SRB for the same contract length and I will have to be without my family during AIT. What is Germany like? What is Sam Houston like? Who has had similar choices to consider? I have 60 days of leave. If I took leave in between assignments does the army pick up the bill for air travel? So many things to think of. A little feedback will help to sort through the pros and cons...Thanks!

I would choose to STAY ARMY regardless of the choice, but that is because I am a Patriot. I have never received a bonus my entire career, so I cannot say that is a deciding factor for me, however, if that is what you are looking for, then go for the money. If you want the career move and the training for the outside, take the MOS.

Reclassing is not like doing IET all over again. There is another thread in the Reenlistment section that covered the 68W AIT for prior-service. I can't speak for Sam Houston (nice area though), but other MOS-T courses are much like regular duty only you go to school. It depends on the course and the location.

If you can handle being away from the family and want the training, do 68W and forget the bonus. Remember, once the bonus is gone, you still have to be a 68W and do your tour.

If you want the cash, reenlist for 92F. The choice is yours, but I would go for the training. It would most likely mean about $20-30,000 a year difference on the outside for you.

I would suggest Germany, Ft Sam is a tiny post, but there are alot of things to do around San Antonio. I went to Germany last year, and spent a month there before being deployed to Iraq, but had to come back to the states and be stationed at Ft. Sam Houston on a Compassionate. I you do go to Germany, you will have plenty of opportunities to visit all of europe, along with your family. you can get just about anywhere on train, drive or even fly. But no matter what its your decision, make the best of it. Its not every job that you get the opportunity to go to Europe.

Thank you for your input. Still, its not an easy choice to make. Money is not the key factor but it does motivate me a little. I simply want the best for my family. A new MOS and skill sounds great but there are many other factors to consider. I will have to sit down with my wife and go over all the pros and cons. I hope then we could both make the right choice. Either way, I have decided not to leave the military at this point. Bring it on!!!

Before getting deployed I was stationed at Ft. Sam and althought it is small it's a nice post that is fairly relaxed. You have a bowling alley on post, no movie theatre though, and there is plenty to do in San Antonio itself. But you'll be able to find something to do in San Antonio and will be able to enjoy your time that you aren't in class. If you have any more questions go ahead an post them up.
