i have a soldier who keeps being bothered by his lt. the lt keeps telling the soldier that he is required to send this soldier to the retention nco. there are other soldiers who are closer to their ets date, but he has never said anything to them. it just seems like this lt is trying to make himself look good by having one of his soldiers reenlist. is there such a policy on lt's sending there soldiers to the retention nco? this particular soldier still has over a year left before his ets date. any help would be appreciated.

Soldiers who are nt indef are supposed to receive retention interviews. I am pretty sure that the following are correct, but you may want to check the reg. 601-280 I think.

* With the Career Counselor: 30 days from arrival to unit
* With the Unit Commander 90 days from arrival
* With the Unit Commander 15-16 months prior to ETS
* With the Career Counselor 13-14 months prior to ETS
* With the Career Counselor 4 months prior to ETS
* With the Reserve Component Career counselor 90-120 days prior to ETS

Career counseling sessions are required to be conducted for all Soldiers in the rank of SSG and below not in an indefinite status.

Because of the new 24-month reenlistment window, the exact times have changed.

With Career Counselor - Within 30 days of assignment to unit (all Soldiers)
With Career Counselor - 90-120 days after assignment to unit (all Soldiers)
With Commander - Annually on BASD anniversary (All Soldiers)
With Commander - 26 months prior to ETS (all Soldiers not serving on indefinite reenlistments)
With Career Counselor - 24-25 months prior to ETS (all Soldiers not serving on indefinite reenlistments)
With Career Counselor - 16-18 months prior to ETS (all Soldiers not serving on indefinite reenlistments)
With Career Counselor - 12-13 months prior to ETS (all Soldiers not serving on indefinite reenlistments)
With Career Counselor - 7 months prior to ETS (all Soldiers not serving on indefinite reenlistments)
With Reserve Counselor - 180 days prior to ETS or beginning of transition leave
With Career Counselor - 60-90 days after reenlistment (all Soldiers)
With Career Counselor - 60-90 days prior to PCS/Leave/Training Start Date or Transition Leave/ETS (all Soldiers)

I'm not sure why the Career Counselor is not going to see the Soldier, but why are you not taking the Soldier to see the Career Counselor. This is your job. You are charged with assisting the entire retention process. Are you talking to your Soldiers about reenlistment?

It's YOUR career! Take control of it before someone else does.
