My advice is to get with whatever SGM reviews your NCOERs and get input. That's what I did when I had to write one many years ago. I only put bullets in the blocks that I had to mention the event\"needs improvement" and left all others blank with a "sucess" check. I also put "no" in most of the values block if I remember correctly. The senior rater is going to have to have comments also so get their input.

You might even want to go as far as calling the NCOER branch here at EREC and talking to a clerk that reviews NCOERs...they are good at what they do, trust me.

now my next question is, should this nco be relieved of his squad leader duties, i know they relived so the soldier dont infect other soldiers but this NCO is not like that. :?: and what should i do to fight for him to keep his rank?

Hip shot i'd say yes...relieve him. They don't take kindly to DUIs anymore....You could try to stand up for him but you better have a long list of great accomplishments with you.

Everyone has a bad day and make mistakes. Fill in the NCOER honestly. Check the blocks that need to be appropriately with supporting bullets for and against as need be. Fight for him as a soldier, he is your soldier, and punish him same way. fair across the board. talk to sgm and see where the chain-of-command stands on the issue, look at this from both sides, not to make an example out of him, but, also, not to just sweep things under the rug, others will know.

I think that Soldiers that get in trouble need the correction to get them back on track. If he is as good as you say he is then he will take the correction and adjust himself appropriatly. As for relieving him of his squad, that is the right action because it shows the Soldiers that what he did has repercussions. When he has corrected himself, then he should be put back into the appropriate level of leadership. I think that sometimes the Chain of Command can be too easy on NCOs that have committed DUI offenses, this is a serious thing and costs a lot of people lives yearly and shouldn't be brushed of lightly.

Like I said earlier... the Chain of Command needs to decide the correct punishment and the NCO will prove thier true grit by how they deal with it.

I am unable to resolve them. Being right is a lonely place to be. Any advice on how to tackle those that appose you?

In my opinion, I would write the NCOER fairly. I would probably give him a needs improvement in Responsibility and Leadership. Hell, he might also have been NCO of the quarter, which in my eyes would be an excellence in Competence. I would just say write it fairly. But with a DUI, I would also expect to see some no blocks for Values on the front page. He is easily not Among the Best, or even Capable in my book since this certainly is not a desired action. Anything higher than a 4 Block for performance would be a travesty. Obviously though, he could even get a 1 or 2 block for potential.

Just a few thoughts of my opinion.
