This is information for the E-5(P) who want to or have already been selected to attend 51C school. I graduated from Lackland in January '14 and I'll give brief run-down of exactly what happened.

1. I was selected at the March '13 board, found out my start date of school (November) in July, and my assignment in August. At this time I already had all phases of ALC complete.

2. About the funding letter. This is a wild goose chase, especially if you don't have a dedicated S-1 shop (like alot of medical units) or a training NCO (like alot of medical units). You are not the first person at your unit to ever go TDY en-route funded by Big Army. You have to seek out those people who have done that (e-mail works great) and see what they did to get funding. I actually got my Hospital CSM involved and he was able to get the right people on the phone to get my funding letter pushed through. After I got my funding memo, I had to take it to a civilian (who hires nurse interns from Baylor) to get my 1610 done. Like I said, it's a wild goose chase!

3. After graduation I reported to my current duty station and during in-processing I gave them all the paperwork for my promotion and change of MOS. The MOS change was done on the spot. Literally right there in front of me she changed it. The promotion piece is a little dicey though. You have to remember that alot of MPC/MPD personnel have not heard of this MOS and it sounds a little weird to them when you show up with a bunch of papers saying, "I need to be E-6 because of this school I went to". So don't be surprised if they give you grief about it. What will happen is if they don't promote you you will get the promotion the next month anyway because E-6 points for 51C are 14/15. So if you wind up having to wait (like I did) for the promotion, don't sweat it. Just take a copy of the SMAPP and 1059 back to the MPC/MPD and they will back date the promotion to your graduation date. Then go right over to the Pay office and do a pay inquiry to get the month or month and a half E-6 pay you deserve.

4. Your time at the schoolhouse, whether it's Lackland or Huntsville, is very brief for the information you need to have to do this job. You will learn the very basics but thats it. So when you finally get to your new duty station I advise that you get your DAU account set up and start knocking out courses. If you go into ACT from AKO once you have the 51C MOS, it oulines exactly what courses to take and it even hyperlinks the course when you click on it. Your Level I certification is priority number one! Your Level I certification is priority number one! Your Level I certification is priority number one! That's not a typo!

I will be happy to try to answer any other questions you might have. Feel free to e-mail me matthew.s.dickson.mil@mail.mil

Hello, am interested in finding out the potential of this job on the civilian side. I understand that everyone is saying it has great potential after the army, I really want to hear from someone who actually know what job title can I research or someone who knows more information about the job market after the service. I hope 51C can assist with some information. Thank you

99% of the students are TDY en route. E-mail me directly and I can look into it. Info on the USAASC proponent page.

Not sure about Huntsville. Lackland is ASU's, ACU's, and misc.

However a new message just popped through on my email today that stated those going to Huntsville are going to have GOV meals and QTRS for duration. It does state that you will receive per diem on weekends. So don't expect to make much money there. So far what I know its still full per diem and lodging at Lackland. Good luck with school. Your first unit is a real eye opener though. Just dont get discouraged because it is a lot to take in your first few weeks at your new unit. Welcome to 51C.

30 days before the start date of your course, you will receive an email with FAQ's. This helped me out with all my questions I had. But to answer your question No ASU's. I just arrived to Huntsville today, tomorrow is the first day of class.
I know I'm digging here and there's no use worrying but I'm really hoping to get picked in this next board. Everyone I've talked to says they think I have a good shot for getting selected but I'd like to get an opinion from the community so here the basics what I'm at:

Meet all prereqs, no derogetory info; have all required documents

MOS: 31B
GT: 114
NCOERS: 2/2; 3/2; 2/1; 2/1
TIS: 9 Years 8 Months

Education: Associates Degree in Criminal Justice (67 SH); Working towards Bachelor's Degree in Business Administation (67 SH): Total: 124 SH

I wish you the best. The only thing holding you back is that 3 spot on your ncoer. Good luck!
I got picked up the May 2013 board and I can't really tell you what they are looking for, but I did try to compare with the people that are currently in my class (AAFC in Huntsville, AL) and most had a degree. Some only had an Associates and they were not working towards a Bachelors. So I would assume education is important. I did not ask about their NCOERS, but I will tell you my NCOERS were a little different than yours. The board is VERY competitive, so I added my 1059's and certificate of training that I felt related closely to the MOS. I also sent a copy of a technical certification. I am not saying this is the standard, I am only telling you what I submitted with my packet. This is why I think it is very hard to tell what the board is looking for. I wish you the best of luck!

You only are required one. I had a very strong packet I was going to submit with just one NCOER but was influenced to wait for the following board (so I could get an additional NCOER). If you are smart- figure out a way to get a change of rater/Complete the Record NCOER (if plausible/applicable).

My stats: 2-1/1 NCOERS, 5 classes away from Bachelors in Business Admin, 300APFT, 39 weapons, strong LOR from 1 star and the proponent still strongly advised to wait for a second NCOER. Unless you really knock out some school in the next year, i'd wait. I too was in that dead end MOS.. Good luck.
SSG,

Dropped my 51C packet and waiting for the April Board to convene. Like you, I am in Hawaii and wouldn't mind staying. What is your status?

Is there a way to get into a 51C position out here so my DEROS isn't a consideration? Meaning, send me TDY for school and come back to Hawaii for duty station. If not, can DEROS be waived for needs of the Army?
Hi, was interested in the PP slides you mentioned. I'm thinking of reclassing to 51c, but still undecided. Curious to know what a typical 51C day is like. Like many in the Army, I've gotten stuck in the rut of "not doing my job". I'm currently on my 2nd MOS and still don't do my job. :-\

He wants us to tell NCOs about the MOS. If anyone needs the powerpoint slide, send me a text.
I am also interested in the PP slides of you would send them to me as well. Thank you

Is anyone privy or lucky enough to know how this board is going to proceed in April? Because the board prior to this one was cancelled, can we expect to be competing among those individuals as well? I see that only 26-36 people were picked for each board prior to that one, is this about the normal range for being awarded the MOS? Anybody have any ideas?

This board is considering everyone who has submitted a packet in the previous 6 months.

The board is suppose to proceed 22-26 April. There were rumors of them canceling the board, but as of right now the board will still happen. You will know the results MAYBE 30 days after...let's hope before then! I submitted my packet and the wait is killing me....

Yes I am aware that it takes up to 30 days after the board convenes before the results are published. I was simply curious as to the amount of other applicants that I was up against, and because the board before this one was cancelled, we now are competing against those applicants as well. Curious, how/where did you here that this board was going to be cancelled?

Just to clarify, I am running the board. It was not cancelled, nor was it ever planned to be. I'd expect for individuals to have their results no later than 30 days, but I'm aiming for notification much quicker. However, I can't make a promise that will happen. As I stated earlier, we are most likely transitioning to conducting a board twice a year vs the current quarterly schedule.
Yeah I crushed everything I could to get my packet complete so that I could make the timeline for the January board and then it was cancelled. So I watched the site literally everyday it seemed to be able to get that packet in. Now the suspense of knowing one way or the other is what is killing me and we are about to step off to NTC for the next 6 weeks so, not so awesome for me finding out.
Here is a question that I have though. If you get selected, I understand that you get your school date and then you get your follow on before you leave for your school. What about circumstances such as kids being in high school? Here is the complete story behind the question, I am in Hawaii right now, and I DEROS out of here next year, well she is a senior next year (2015 is her senior year with graduation of 2016) if I get picked up, is it possible that I can extend out here with the contracting office out here or will that not be possible? Either way, she has grown up in the Army and she understands, but I was just curious.
ssgherpel,

I just depends. I spoke with the SFC that does the assignments. I am stationed in Alaska, and I am dual military. I e-mailed him and asked if there was a way to get reassigned back to Ft. Wainwright, that way I didn't have to worry about moving my family from overseas and deal with MACP issues. I am essentially doing a COT, and then my husband's S-1 will do a common DEROS once I return. I have his contact information, but it is at my office. If you email me, I can shoot you the contact information when I get in the office tomorrow.

I have been doing the same thing. I looked at Oct board and when it was conducted then the result dates, there was about 26 days from the board to the results.

Q9. Can a solider submit a packet if he/she is on assignment?

No. If the current line on the Enlisted Record Brief (ERB) indicates the Soldier is on assignment he/she will need to contact their Branch Manager and ask for the assignment to be removed, or the Branch Manager needs to type a memorandum stating that the solider will be removed from assignment if he/she is selected for MOS 51C
I am really looking into this MOS and just really looked into the day the last board ended. I would just like a rough guess if I stand a chance at these boards.
