I made cutoff for E5 01 Aug 2012..I was told by psg to be ready for the E6 board by 01 Feb 13, when I explained to him that I just got promoted and don't even have an NCOER he replied "you are going anyways, it is up to you rather its a promotion or reduction board". My concerns are I feel like I'm being pushed to advance into a position I'm not ready for, and ultimately it's going to cost me my career. I feel like I have no options and wanted some input before I take it up the chain.

Would you even make points right away?
I don't feel your concerns- because if he thinks you're ready, shoot for the top!

There's no way they would demote you for not passing a SSG promotion board. (Unless your chain of Command is totally crazy.)

But if it bothers you that much, go talk with 1SG.
I would take the reccommendaton from your PSG and go for it!! Not too often does a young NCO get told to be prepared for another promotion board. Have you been preparing yourself IAW the LOI/MOI? Rehearing the creeds and working on your autobiography? Your recent board already has you set up for success because it is still a fresh memory.

Take the time now to prepare yourself, your uniforms, leader book, etc. Get junior Solders involved and prepared for a future board along with you. When I went to the E-6 board, I was also sponsor to a Soldier of the Month candidate and a sponsor for the E-5 board. So the board saw me three times that day.

As far the NCOER's are concerned, you will rate one from when you were promoted (1 AUG) to the last day of the month prior to actual promotion to E-6. The second will be from your new DOR as a E-6 to 31 July to closeout the annual.

Best of luck!!

Says which reg??????????????????????????????
Its not in the 623-3. The majority of senior leadership prefer the NCO to have a NCOER that will cover rated time as a TL. When he gets promoted it would be a Change of Rater due to his MOS changing from XXX20 to XXX30. Typically going from a SL to the PSG as the Rater. To close out the annual time frame remaining, it will typically be a COR (Complete the Record).

I was just giving him a heads up of what to possibly expect in the future since he has not dealt in depth with NCOER's.
We had this discussion a few months back- most think it would be awesome to have your first NCOER be as a SSG...

And no one saw anything wrong with it.

Also, you DON'T get a COR everytime you get promoted- that's silly.

Then count me in the minority. Spc to SGT to SSG with first NCOER being at the SSG rank? I encourage advancement therefore, I think E4s should be aware/involved/receive (not sure of the correct word here) of the NCOER. But to be a SSG and receive your 1st NCOER seems detrimental to those you will counsel

Oh, by the way, Autobhn, are you currently an NCO?

^^^^This never happened to me in about 6 NCOERS that I received. To better serve the NCO, it is best that he will get an annual NCOER unless a Change of Rater does actually happen. Also, a Complete the Record will not be required. I did receive a Complete The Record when I submitted my last WO packet to the board.

E6 boards are becoming much stricter. We do not even know this E5 would be in the primary zone when he goes to the E6 board which will affect his points. I am with 4ID and I knew many soldiers (including my own) that were non-rec by the promotion board. And this happened downrange. It is not a give me anymore because your leadership recommended you.

Everything is just speculation so just take it with a grain of salt.

Only if the SSG has not been ultra-high-speed. Smiler That SSG should be seeking out guidance and help from his supervisors.

I agree that NCOs have not had enough experience. During OIF/OEF they were promoting like crazy and there is a serious deficiency in many areas. Mostly Garrison stuff though- our Army hasn't been this well-trained for fighting in a long time!!

As for me, I enlisted PFC April 2000, SPC w/ Waiver 2001,
SGT after finished PLDC Sep2003, SSG Nov 2005,
WO1 Nov 2009, CW2 Nov 2011.
(Now I have to wait several years for next promotion- it used to be 3 years average but we'll see..)
