Hey ladies! I'm leaving for basic on April 7th to Fort Jackson, very scared bc I'm leaving my one year old daughter for 2 months..but its worth it to know she'll be taken care of for the next 4 (or more) years.
SO here's a list I've compiled for when I leave, I should put in here that my recruiter sucked horribly, so I have NO IDEA what to expect, although that might be the best way to go in, so I don't show up and my expectations are completely wrong..but anyways, here's my list:
Pack of white (bikini cut, no grannys for me) undies
2 pair white sports bras
1 regular bra (not white, its gray/with a lil pink, im a bit chas strapped so I can really buy another one)
white ankle cut socks (do we need higher cut ones)
hair brush
pony tails
bobby pins
toothbrush
(umm..are contacts allowed? might be a stupid question but even my recruiter didnt have a 100% answer)
tampons
excedrin
chapstick
dental floss
black watch
combination lock (dont wanna hassle with keys)
pics
envelopes and paper
black pen
blakc sharpy
...and it might be late but i cant think of anything else

could anyone tell me what i might be forgetting, what could be useful to already have prepared. i was told i could only bring the army backpack i got at MEPS, and everything should fit in it. not too sure what im gonna wear there, probably just jeans, a tee, and i havent decided on the shoes. its a choice between my nike air max 360's (for comfort, but they might be a hassle down the road) or some regular flats (for less stress)..
also, my hair has LOTS of strays going all over the place, i used to play soccer, and i would wear the athletic wrapping tape in the my hair (not the sticky kind, the soft stuff they put on before the sticky tape), but i was told this wasn't allowed...is this true? if so i suppose ill go with gel..also, i already basically have callouses on my feet from playing soccer all my life (and coming from the tx country), so should i worry about blisters? they might be an inevitability, but like i said before, im too broke right now to buy moleskin for nay blisters...well thanks ladies for your info and advice, glad to hear back from you

PT socks must be white with no logos, and COVER the ankle. (Not just half of it. Wink )
You can bring the contacts but you will PROBABLY have an eye exam and be issued "Birth Control Glasses" (called that because they're so ugly no one would want someone who's wearing them.. Big Grin )
----GET USED TO GLASSES.
You can't wear Contacts in the field, or downrange. (Iraq, Afghan, etc...)
Once you get out of AIT you can get army-issue regular looking glasses.

just to let u know that u can not have ankle socks it is not permitted, and keep the excedrin and chapstick home they will make u throw it away u have to see the military dr to recieve those, this is funny because u even have to do that with chapstick
Girls just remember that you can get most things when you get to basic. They will send you through the PX and have you get lots of stuff. If you can limit your self to only a backpack. You have to carry what you bring along with everything needed from reception. I went through Jackson 7 years ago, remember that it's not that bad, the worst day was the fist and it was kind of a joke. It's what you make of it. I'm a girly girl and had no issues and made some great friends.
Things you will want to be sure to have due to its busy season for basic are:

Sports bra's white - bring lots people tend to steal them and it could be a few days until your able to do laundry.
Same goes for your undies too. Get the sexy granny ones in white also.
And when you go to basic go in running shoes, they will make you buy a pair there, but you might need them for a few days.
Flip flops are a must, and just some small shower needs until you can get to the PX, there you can get full size that will last you for a wile.
you might want to get paper, you will need pens, and stamps for righting, but you can get them there if needed. I would suggest bringing stamps though.
During basic they will let you go back for needed items, so don't worry about stocking up. (usually happens when the guys need haircuts).

If your looking for a Man, stay away, it's cool to make friends but nothing more. Keep your cool for the 2 months and work on passing your PT and Skills testing. Just stay out of trouble and if you like me just bite your lip when ever you have a smart comment.

Good luck to all and welcome

SGT Megan Francis
