[quote:93bf6f7f43="RedKat"]What is your rank?
I ask, because it looks like your are a E-4 and below trying to skip out on some army stuff.
Anyways, you will not get assigned to S-1 by all means, usually you are assigned to HQ and attached to whatever Bn they feel like. You are never attached to a Company, unless it's HQ.
Yes, you will be going to the field if you are at the combat Bn. I just came back from there. I had not have any job with them, therefore I pulled guard duty every other day. For the whole 6 days, whoopy-doo. It is not a combat job and your NCOs are trying to get you out of any detail, cuz who the hell is going to run the job, if you are gone?
If you are really good, and I mean, really good, you will be in your office regardless of what your BC or 1SG, or LTC or whoever says, cuz there are whole bunch of other BCs, 1SGs and LTCs that need your opinion.
Learn your 27-10 inside out and you'll be set for the rest of your time. I have my batallion commanders and 1SGs running to me every day. The week I went to the field they had a heat stroke, cuz no one was able to help them out, so I was brought back.[/quote:93bf6f7f43]
Thank you for the reply!
I will be going back as an E-3, I was an E-4 prior.
No, I am not trying to "skip out" on some Army stuff. Please realize I already did 4 years, and I did it in a combat MOS. I had NO job 99% of the time other than playing janitor and being traded off to other areas for details. It is disappointing to be 18 years old joining the Army and realizing you are basically there to rake leaves and mop floors! I have no problem doing that stuff, but I do not want to spend my entire career doing it when I just went through so much training to do something else. This was how my first 4 years was, I deeply regretted joining into a combat MOS for that reason. This is why I wanted to give it another go but in a different MOS. My question was am I actually going to have a true job? Or am I going to be tasked out to do everything else under the sun like when I was a Scout? I do not think it is wrong to want to do what you are trained to do, I want to be a professional that has needed skills and knowledge that is better utilized performing those skills rather than cleaning MILES gear on a month long detail.
As for the field time, I spent an estimated 7 months out of the year in the field my first 4 years, that was with the 3rd ACR. So forgive me if I rather not repeat that!
I am disappointed to hear you were sent to the field with no purpose out there though.
The bottom line is, I enjoyed the Army and serving the first time, but wish I would have made a few different decisions for the reasons above. I know I will have to do my thing with details and such no matter what job I have, I just do not want that to BE my thing like it was last time. If I am going through 11 weeks of AIT, I would like to actually perform my job. I am not a new recruit out of high school wanting to come in and be lazy! Hope this clears that up.
As for assignments, what is the most common assignment if there is one? Are 27D's assigned pretty much wherever the Army can go? What about other branch bases? Thanks.
EDIT: One more thing, I notice the higher cutoff scores for 27D. How difficult do you find it to get E-5?
