Sapper School

Hey,

I was wondering if there was anyone out there who could tell me a little bit about sapper school. Like what kind of PT I should do to prepare, what stuff I should study ahead of time, and generally what the course is like. And any general requirements of the course I should know about.

This would be a great place to start. if you haven't already. your unit (if your going as a unit) should start a Sapper Train-up 4-6 weeks before your class date. if they haven't, i would suggest it to your chain of command. a past graduate of the course can walk you and your peers through the entire course schedule and conduct your PT sessions accordingly.

Here at Bragg the training program is ran by our S-3 (a past graduate) and overseen by the Brigade SGM for accuracy. believe me, it's a big deal around here, feel free to send a personal messasge for more info about training times and places (if your local). Our class starts in April 05 so training will begin late Feb, early Mar.

Be prepared to pass the APFT with a MINIMUM score of 210 pts. meet the standards of AR 600-9. Meet the standards for the Combat Water Survival Test (DA PAM 351.4)

Back to the Grind.
Gentlemen,

I have the honor of being named my Commands NCO of the year, as my reward i get to go to sapper leader course, I have read the website, but i would like some first hand knowledge, what is the best way to prepare myself? I have a PT score of 270 and rising, so no problem there, i am also good at land nav, your best tips and advice would really help. i would like to know where most students have problems? what is the training really like, not just what the website says? i have zero experience with demo, will they cover it adequately enough for a reasonably intelligent person to pick it up and apply it? anything you guys have is most welcome, i have about a million questions so please give it all up!

Hoah!

+1 on those questions. I'm kinda interested in going myself.

Also I know it says on the sapper pamphlet that

Enlisted soldiers should qualify in their MOS with a priority going to 21B, 11B, and 19D, specialist promotable and above, and officers in the rank of Captain and below.

does this mean any mos can go, just the priority is for 21B, 11B, and 19D?
SGT K, the subjects in the General Studies phase that most people loose a lot of points on is Knots and mountain operations. the other things which are worth large chunks of points(like 100pts a piece) are Demolitions exam, Patrolling test, Knots Test, Air Ops Test, The Runs 20 pts a piece X 5. You need 700pts out of 1000pts to earn a sapper tab, but it is an accomplishment to just finish the course. If you dont know any demo, either find a sapper grad, find a combat engineer and have him teach you the MDI (modernized demo- initiators), or find an fm 5-250 which covers basic demo. the advanced stuff will be taught in the course, but you should get a basic understanding of how to rig up some c4 using an MDI System before. although its not required, some soldiers in my class didnt know anything about explosives. as for PT train up Do a shit load of Squats, Ruck marching, running 3-6 miles at 7min mile pace, more squats, pull ups and military press(for boat pt and carrying equipment) then some more squats. And if you only have time to study and learn one thing, make it the KNOTS. Learn the knots before you get there and it will be easier. And for MACH SOLDIER, you can be any MOS or rank, the course is just targeted at junior leaders, spc/SGT/SSG or officers O1/02/O3. This course is a LEADERSHIP course designed to challenge you and bring out your inner leader. Dont expect to leave a DEMO Expert or being more high speed, but do expect to leave being a different person, a stronger leader.
Right so I'm currently on a study abroad program or I'd just ask my C.O. I was wondering if Cadets in an ROTC program can go to sapper school, I saw that earlier MstrJmpMstr had posted that his S-3 was a prior graduate so I know officers can be sappers, but can you go as a cadet or did the S-3 go through OCS and go to Sapper school as an enlisted?
